Unlike many other capital cities throughout the world, British Columbia's capital, Victoria is not the bustling metropolis of commerce and industry of its counterparts. Rather, it is best known for an easy, ambling pace of living, and lush gardens, green spaces and woodlands.
Located on Vancouver Island, separated from British Columbia's mainland by the Johnstone and Queen Charlotte Straits to the northeast and by the Strait of Georgia to the southeast, Victoria boasts a temperate climate and sensory treats for all five senses. All of which adds up to make this unique part of Canada stand out as one of the finest tourist destinations in the world. Is it any wonder that many of Victoria's visitors are inspired to eventually move here?
British influence is abundant in Victoria. Named after England's longest reigning monarch, architecture reminiscent of the Victorian era is noticeable in Victoria's downtown, beckoning visitors to partake in high tea, to meander through antique shops, or to find a cozy ‘snug' in one of its old English pubs. Victoria's picturesque Inner Harbour is a popular place for local artists to set up mini-galleries of their work and for street performers to show off their incredible talents. Victoria is also home to the Royal BC Museum, which presents a tribute to the indigenous Haida people and their beautiful art. A trip on the water means seeing orca whales and seals and loads of other interesting wildlife in the sea and in the air.
But don't write Victoria off as being sleepy or old-fashioned. A vibrant nightlife keeps the heartbeat of Victoria pulsing at an exciting tempo. Clubs, cabarets and pubs offer music, dancing and merriment for all tastes. From casual to sophisticated, jazz to country, intimate to sprawling – there are ample venues and choices for ways to spend an evening. Concerts, festivals – such as the Victoria Symphony Splash – and theatrical performances are commonplace and often outdoors; spectators can enjoy the entertainment with the sun on their faces or under a blanket of stars.
Seafood lovers need not look any further than this island city. The catch of the day is barely off the boat before it reaches the kitchens of Victoria's many swanky restaurants. At the end of the day, cap the whole experience off by falling into peaceful slumber in a room at the famous Empress Hotel, one of Canada's finest hotels.
