Nassau
Nestled in warm Atlantic waters southeast of Florida's coastal shores are the Bahama Islands, made up of 700 islands and almost 2,000 outcrops (most of which are simply large rock formations). Nassau, the capital city of the Bahamas, is situated on New Providence Island, which is one of the 14 main islands, and one of only 30 populated islands. A richly cultured city, Nassau possesses Caribbean history and culture that is seamlessly combined with shiny new resort ambiance.

Visitors to Nassau should be prepared for hearing things that go "bump" in the night – at least twice a year, anyway – as the Bahamian festival Junkanoo hits the streets of Nassau in the early morning hours of December 26th and again on January 1st. A bright and noisy parade of costumed locals and visitors dance and jump down Bay Street to the sounds of brass horns and drums, punctuated with cowbells and whistles.

Bay Street, which runs parallel to the shoreline, is a must-see with a variety of shops, stalls and boutiques. Another favourite shopping stop is the Straw Market. Bargain for handicrafts and souvenirs at the market where local merchants sell everything from pine seed dolls, paintings, straw work and Junkanoo art to clothing, conch shell jewelry, driftwood paintings, blown glass and ceramics.

With easy bridge access from New Providence Island, visitors can venture to Paradise Island and the lavish Atlantis Resort. No other all-inclusive resort can boast such extravagant amenities as the Atlantis. A sprawling property that features the largest marine habitat in the world, blissful spas, oceanside golf, top-notch dining, water parks and slides for all thrill levels, water and on-land sports, every imaginable entertainment venue, oodles of shops, and luxurious rooms, from relaxed comfort to ultra posh. Your reservation includes full access to the entire resort.

Even with plenty to choose from on New Providence Island, there are many other attractions to experience on one of the Out Islands, each with its own unique vibe and distinct appeal. Requiring little more than a quick boat ride to get there, sail into one of the 30 marinas on Abacos Island, the "Sailing Capital of the World". Dive in the 6,000-foot Tongue of the Ocean trench – the third largest barrier reef on earth – which is just off Andros Island. Fish for the biggest and best marlin and tuna in Hemingway's haunts off Bimini. Surf the giant waves from Eleuthera, on Harbour Island. Or simply do nothing at all. Soak up the sun, sounds and smells of Cable Beach, Cabbage Beach, Paradise Beach and many, many more.
